Acne & Acne Scars
We know how frustrating life can feel when you have those stubborn pimples or zits that overstay their welcome and refuse to go. Pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads are all classified as acne and can happen to anyone at any age.
Acne can be treated in a variety of ways depending on its severity. Mild to moderate acne can be treated with topical products such as skin cleansers, serums, and moisturizers. Severe cases of acne may benefit from other treatments.
What Causes Acne?
Acne can be caused by many factors, such as excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and inflammation. It often shows up on the face, forehead, chest, and upper back because these body parts have the most oil glands.
Acne can also be triggered by:
- Sweat and skin pollution
- Skin irritation and Inflammation
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Poor diet
- Medications
What Causes Acne Scarring?
After acne clears, it may leave behind blemishes or dark spots. Acne scarring happens when those blemishes become inflamed and the walls of your pores break down.
As your body tries to repair your skin, it produces collagen. Acne scars become more visible when too much collagen has been created. In other cases, loss of tissue can lead to pits in your skin and also cause scarring.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a common skin condition that can cause a flushed appearance on your face. It can also cause visible blood vessels and pimple-like bumps. Symptoms may come and go, flaring for a few weeks or months before subsiding.
There is currently no cure for rosacea. However, it can be managed with medication, gentle skin care, and by avoiding certain triggers. We can help you manage this condition and the visible symptoms it may cause.
What Causes Rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but there are some factors that may increase your risk of developing the condition:
- Being 30 years old or older
- Having fair skin
- Having a family member with rosacea or severe acne
- Having acne breakouts, cysts, or nodules
Skin Laxity, Fine Lines, & Volume Loss
Skin laxity happens when your skin loses its firmness and elasticity. This can happen naturally as you age, and develop alongside fine lines and wrinkles.
As your skin loses its volume and retains less moisture, it can lose its ability to hold its shape. When this happens, your skin may appear loose and saggy. That’s a concern we can help address with a wide range of treatments.
What Causes Skin Laxity?
There are many reasons why your skin may become loose, including the following:
- Aging: The amount of collagen and elastin your body produces can decrease with age.
- Weight loss: Sagging skin can be a common concern after significant, rapid weight loss. Carrying excess weight on the body can damage collagen and elastin fibers, making it harder for your skin to bounce back.
- Pregnancy: Loose skin is a common concern for women after pregnancy, especially around the abdomen.
Some other causes that may accelerate skin laxity as you age include sun exposure, some illnesses, and certain lifestyle habits.
What Causes Volume Loss?
Volume loss can happen when your skin loses the tightness, smoothness, and fullness that gives you a more youthful look. This can be caused by:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes
- Certain medications
- Lifestyle factors (poor diet, smoking, stress)
- Injuries
- Severe illnesses
Hyperpigmentation & Uneven Skin Tones
Melanin is a pigment that gives color to your eyes, hair, and skin. A key benefit of this pigment is its protection from the sun’s UV rays. If your cells produce too much melanin, your skin may have an uneven tone.
What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is caused by excess melanin production in your skin, which can occur for a variety of reasons, including the following:
- Excessive sun exposure
- Pregnancy
- Chemotherapy
