You may have heard of an interesting new skincare treatment trending on social media and in celebrity circles: salmon sperm facials. While it may sound odd, the core concept behind salmon sperm treatments has been around for some time, and it actually originated in wound healing research.

Topical salmon sperm facials may offer benefits such as increased hydration, smoother skin texture, and a more radiant appearance over time with consistent use.

If you’re interested in salmon sperm as a skin treatment, consult with an experienced dermatologist for professional advice. Alternatives to salmon sperm facials are also available, including vegan options and more traditional Hydrafacials.

What Is a Salmon Sperm Facial?

“Salmon sperm facial” is a little misleading because it doesn’t involve the use of raw salmon sperm. In reality, a “salmon sperm facial” refers to skin treatments that use purified DNA fragments from salmon or sturgeon. These fragments are called polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN) or polynucleotides (PN).

Procedure Origins

The salmon sperm trend is recent, but the use of PDRN predates the 21st century. Research into using PDRNs began in the 1980s in Italy, and PDRN products were eventually used to treat diabetic ulcers and surgical wounds.

Then, in the 2000s, South Korean researchers began exploring PDRN’s application in aesthetics. Soon, the treatment’s potential spread globally and garnered more attention around the world.

Topical Treatments

The term “salmon sperm facial” may imply a topical treatment, and currently, PDRN-based products used in facials are primarily applied topically.

Topical treatments involve using serums, masks, or creams containing PDRN/PN as part of an in-clinic treatment or an at-home skincare routine. This approach is non-invasive and generally safe for most skin types. However, since the skin barrier can limit the absorption of large molecules like DNA fragments, the effects of topical PDRN/PN treatments tend to be milder.

Potential benefits may include enhanced hydration, smoother skin texture, and a more radiant appearance over time with consistent use.

Benefits & Downsides

Like any medical procedure, salmon sperm treatments carry some risks. But they also offer potential benefits.

Potential Benefits of Salmon Sperm Treatments

Salmon sperm facials can potentially lead to:

  • Firmer skin thanks to stimulating more collagen and elastin production
  • Fewer fine lines
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits
  • A “glow” that some people notice right after their treatment
  • More hydrated skin

Potential Downsides of Salmon Sperm Treatments

Salmon sperm treatments can cause side effects like mild swelling and redness, but these should resolve within a few days.

Multiple sessions of the treatment may be needed, and each session typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Alternatives to Salmon Sperm Facials

Salmon sperm facials are an exciting new treatment, but they’re not for everyone. If you’re allergic to fish and don’t want to risk a reaction, or if you simply don’t enjoy the concept, there are other options that offer anti-aging benefits.

Vegan Alternatives

For those who avoid animal products, there are treatments available that source DNA fragments from plants or microorganisms. Plant sources include wild Korean ginseng, rice, and green tea. Meanwhile, biotechnologists are producing PDRN-like compounds from microorganisms through fermentation processes. Research shows that this method offers higher absorption.

Note that vegan PDRN treatments are relatively new and have undergone less research.

Hydrafacials

If you’re looking for a way to pamper yourself and improve the look of your skin, a Hydrafacial may be a suitable option. This is a patented 3-step procedure that uses a specialized wand and serums.

First, the wand removes dirt and oil from your skin’s pores. Your skin may also be exfoliated with a peel. Next, a vacuum-like attachment pulls debris from the skin’s pores. Finally, a pen-like attachment delivers an antioxidant-rich serum that moisturizes the skin.
